How It Works

From the first conversation to a lifetime together

Our options

Three ways to bring home an OPD dog

Whether you want to start with a puppy, continue the training yourself, or bring home a fully trained companion, every dog is raised in our home and matched to yours.

Not sure which one suits you? That is exactly what our first conversation is for.

Option 01

Super Pup

14–16 weeks old

For owners who want a puppy that has been set up properly from day one. Pups stay with us from 8 to 16 weeks, the most important developmental window in a dog’s life, so your puppy arrives confident, well-mannered and ready to grow into a balanced companion that can protect.

Includes

  • Socialisation: new places, people and animals, regular car rides, and everyday manners such as not jumping up.
  • Obedience foundations: works for food, learns sit, down and stand, and walks nicely on a lead.
  • Protection foundations: drive, a full and calm grip, confidence around equipment, and real enthusiasm for the work.
  • Home life: crate training, a toilet routine, and living alongside our older dogs.
  • Health: vaccinations and deworming at 6, 9 and 12 weeks, and a microchip.

Option 02

Project Dog

Approximately 12 months old · Groundwork training

A young, well-bred dog selected for sound nerves, good health and the drive to become a working companion. It is a starting point, not a finished product: what it becomes depends on the training you put in from here.

Includes

  • Socialisation: comfortable with people, other dogs and new environments.
  • Obedience: sit, down, stand and recall on lead, walks nicely on a lead, and short sit-stays and down-stays. Works for food and a toy.
  • Protection foundation: drive developed, understands the game and grips confidently on a sleeve. No advanced protection or man-orientation work yet.
  • Home life: crate trained, toilet trained, and at ease travelling in a vehicle.
  • Health: vaccinations, deworming and microchip up to date, plus a hip and elbow check by a vet.

Is a Project Dog right for you? This option is only for buyers with the knowledge to continue the dog’s training: you have trained a working-breed dog before, or will train under a qualified trainer, and you can give a young, driven dog the daily exercise and structure it needs. We’ll talk through your experience first, and if it isn’t the right fit, we’ll recommend another option.

Option 03

Complete Companion

18 months – 3 years old · Fully trained

A fully trained dog that is easy to live with and ready to protect. Calm in the house, well-mannered in public and reliable on your cues: a family companion first and a protector when it matters.

Includes

  • Obedience: reliable on and off lead, including stays, recall and a down in motion. Walks calmly on a loose lead in public and responds to voice cues alone.
  • Protection: man-orientation exercises, tested in realistic scenarios with hidden equipment. Releases on command, so you stay in full control.
  • Vehicle: travels calmly and is trained to protect you in and around the vehicle.
  • Home life: fully house trained and crate trained, and settles easily, following you like a shadow.
  • Health: vaccinations, deworming, microchip, hip and elbow check, sterilisation, and a vet health certificate within 7 days of handover.

Finding the right dog

How we match you with your dog

Every dog we place is chosen for a specific home. Before anything is agreed, we talk about your home, your family, your routine, any other pets and your experience with dogs.

For a Complete Companion, we also shape the final stage of training around your life, whether that means children, horses, other pets or a busy household.

Sometimes the honest answer is that a different option, or waiting a while, would suit you better. If so, we’ll tell you.

Handover and beyond

Handover and support

At handover we spend time with you, teaching you how to work with your dog so you work as a team from day one.

Most dogs take 2 to 6 months to fully settle into a new home, and we guide you through it. After that, our phone stays open for advice, guidance and updates.
